Here are traditional Salish Indian coyote stories, recorded by Salish elders and illustrated by Indian artists from Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana.  Written at a fourth-grade level, these legends are meant to be enjoyed by people of all ages-from three to eighty-three-just as they have been for generations among the Salish, who often gathered together to listen to these stories during cold, dark Montana winters.

"Coyote Gets Lovesick"  Coyote is smart, but sometimes too smart for his own good.  He becomes so lovesick for the beautiful daughter of the chief that he dies of thirst and hunger.

"Coyote and Raven"  Raven flies by with a piece of grease.  The hungry coyote attempts ot get Raven to talk and drop the grease.

"Coyote's Dry Meat Turns Into Live Deer"  Fox tells Coyote of a camp full of dried deer meat.  The man at the camp shares freely with Coyote but Coyote gets greedy and ends up hungry.
